The Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWUG) has also declared a nationwide strike.

They have thus joined the Senior Staff Association and Ghana Association of University Administrators in the industrial action.

The Union says the action has been necessitated following government’s failure to address its pension and conditions of service demand.

Addressing the media in Kumasi, National Chairman of TEWUG, Sulemana Abdul-Rahman noted that “the labour unions in the public universities wrote to National Labour Commission (NLC) in October 2023, in demand of implementation of a ruling by the Commission concerning payment of Vehicle Maintenance Allowance, Off-Campus Allowance, payment of Tier 2 pension funds and payment of Overtime/Extra duty Allowance to deserving staff in the public universities but no positive response has come out of it”.

“The sheer failure of the National Labour Commission/government to comply with the ruling and address the demands of the three labour Unions in the public Universities namely; Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA), TEWUG and SSA- UoG had left us with no option than to lay down our tools”.

Effective February 1, TEWUG has resolved to withdraw all its services in all public universities as a means of “advocating for workers’ rights”.

“Following the lackadaisical nature of the employer which is the Government of Ghana to address the challenges and problems of TEWUG members in the traditional public universities, the Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWUG) hereby declare an indefinite nationwide strike effective on Thursday, 1st February 2024, until further notice” Abdul Rahman indicated.
