Former President, John Dramani Mahama’s pledge to dissolve the Sanitation Ministry if he wins the upcoming December elections has garnered support from the Chamber for Local Governance (ChaLoG).

ChaLoG contends that the Ministry has fallen short of its intended purpose since its establishment.

According to Richard Fiadomor, the President of ChaLoG, the creation of the Sanitation Ministry was redundant as its responsibilities overlapped with those of the Local Government Ministry.

Mr Fiadomor advocates for the merger of the Sanitation Ministry with the Ministry of Local Governance to streamline operations and ensure the efficient utilization of state resources.

In an interview with Citi News, Mr. Fiadomor affirmed ChaLoG’s support for Mr. Mahama’s decision to implement this merger.

“During the NDC administration, there was this monthly cleanup exercise that was done to ensure that the local areas become clean. When this government by Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo came they had to shelve that particular thing and form a new ministry.”

“For us as a Chamber, we agree with His Excellency John Dramani Mahama that the sanitation waste management must go back to the local government.”

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has unveiled his intention to dissolve the Sanitation Ministry if elected President in the forthcoming December elections.

Mr Mahama criticised the Sanitation Ministry’s performance, citing its failure to meet its obligations and the wasteful utilisation of limited resources.

Expressing dismay at the deteriorating sanitary conditions across the nation, Mr. Mahama lamented the lack of improvement since the ministry’s inception, which he deemed ineffective.

Additionally, Mr Mahama disclosed plans to merge the Transport, Aviation, and Railways ministries into a single ministry for improved efficiency and coordination.

“We will close down the Ministry of Sanitation, one, to reduce expenditure and two, I don’t see any use. The country is dirtier than when there was no Ministry of Sanitation.”

“Indeed, this country was cleaner when sanitation was under Local Government than as a standalone ministry and we will close that ministry and we will take the Sanitation schedule back to Local Government because we want to reduce government expenditure.”

“It is not only the Sanitation Ministry.”

“In transport, aviation and railways will be closed down and send them back to the Transport Ministry. We are going to combine Communications and Information again. So we want to reduce the number of ministries,” he announced.
