Deputy Ranking Member on the Education Committee of Parliament, Dr. Clement Apaak, has fired back at the government over its failure to admit the alarming rate of WASSCE examination malpractices in Ghana.
He slammed the government for attacking former President John Dramani Mahama when he had only spoken to facts that had also been published by the media and affirmed by the West African Examination Council.
Former President John Dramani Mahama in 2023 challenged the authenticity of the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.
Despite the Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum’s assertion that the 2023 WASSCE results were the best since 2015, Mahama contests this, alleging lax invigilation and teacher assistance.
During his country tour, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) discredited the examination results, pointing to malpractices and students conniving with teachers to cheat.
President Akufo-Addo in February 2024 hit back at former President John Mahama, over his lack of integrity claim about the recent WASSCE results.
The President stated that the position of Mahama with regards to the WASSCE results was a misguided sentiment.
Speaking at the 187th speech and prize-giving day of the Wesley Girls Senior High School on Saturday, February 10, 2024 in Cape Coast, he said: “It is a pity, though, that the sad nature of aspects of contemporary Ghanaian politics drove some otherwise allegedly responsible people, including a former president and perennial presidential candidate [of the NDC], to question the integrity of the results happily without any foundation and to attribute these results to cheating.
“Students of Wesley Girls High School, do you cheat in examinations? I’m sure this loud no will send a strong message to those who expressed these unfortunate, misguided sentiments.”
But Dr. Apaak has fired back, stressing that there is enough evidence to prove that the examination was characterised by malpractice.
He stressed that there is enough evidence from the media and the WAEC to prove that what Mahama said was the truth.
He attacked a video in which the issue was addressed with several stories and confirmation from WAEC to show that the 2023 examination recorded several malpractices.
“Rather than admit the truth that examination malpractices have escalated to dizzying levels, and to join stakeholders in finding solutions, the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia NPP government would rather attack John Dramani Mahama for saying what is the docunented truth. Watch this short documentary on the true facts about the alarming rate of WASSCE examination malpractices in Ghana.”
