Former Deputy Chief of Staff and Health Minister, Alex Segbefia, has raised concerns over the composition and conduct of the Electoral Commission of Ghana pertaining to the missing BVDs.

According to him, the Electoral Commission is being stacked with persons sympathetic to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), raising doubts about its impartiality and integrity.

“The Electoral Commission is filled with NPP apparatchiks. So, anything suspicious creates a problem for us. So, they have to come good,” he stated on 3FM’s Sunrise on April 18.

Mr Segbefia further questioned the legitimacy of certain commissioners, citing examples like Bossman Asare and other appointees who he alleged to have strong ties to the NPP.

“Here’s a situation where we have a founded position that you are totally NPP. We have all the evidence that you are NPP and you are now a referee. Bossman Asare and all these new people who have been the patrons and things that have been recruited are they all not commissioners? So, you have created a problem already with your appointments, then there’s track record,” Segbefia remarked, highlighting the conflict of interest he perceives within the Commission.

The former Health Minister also raised doubts about the transparency of the 2020 election results, questioning whether they accurately reflected the will of the people. “Are we totally satisfied with the way the results came out in 2020? All these figures that nobody has explained,” he asserted.

Segbefia acknowledged the court’s decision to uphold the election results, but emphasized that it does not erase the need for accountability.

“The court says they have won; fine we have taken it, but does it mean that we should accept that nothing was wrong? We don’t accept that nothing was wrong,” he asserted.

Expressing skepticism towards the Electoral Commission’s handling of electoral processes, Segbefia referenced recent controversies surrounding the loss of BVDs and Laptops.

“These machines, as General Mosquito says, nothing has ever been lost before, why now?” he questioned, alluding to the need for a thorough investigation into such discrepancies.

In addition to his critique of the Electoral Commission, Segbefia also expressed disappointment with the National Peace Council’s lack of assertiveness in addressing electoral concerns.

“I have not been happy with the Peace Council, because unfortunately they haven’t had teeth,” he lamented, suggesting that the Council should play a more proactive role in safeguarding the electoral process.
