The 2024 flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has called for a renewed direction in the management of Ghana’s natural resources.

He emphasised that this new direction is crucial to ensure that all Ghanaians, rather than a select few, benefit from the country’s natural resources.

Addressing the ‘3rd Annual Transformational Dialogue on Small-Scale Mining’ organised by the University of Energy and Natural Resources in Sunyani on Wednesday, May 15, Mr Mahama outlined his commitment to this cause if elected in the forthcoming election.

He stressed the importance of an inclusive approach to resource management.

Mr Mahama stated his readiness to chart a new vision for the country’s mining sector, aiming to make it more equitable and beneficial for the broader population.

He highlighted the need for policies that distribute the wealth generated from mining more fairly across society. The former President acknowledged the significant role that the small-scale mining sector plays in Ghana’s economy.

He noted that it provides livelihoods for thousands of people and contributes substantially to national development, underscoring its importance.

Mr Mahama reiterated his dedication to transforming the mining industry to ensure it supports sustainable development and widespread prosperity. He thus called for collaborative efforts to maximise the sector’s potential for the benefit of all Ghanaians.

“We must also prioritise preserving our environment and protecting our natural resources for future generations. This means taking bold steps to rehabilitate and restore areas affected by illegal mining and investing in renewable energy sources to reduce our reliance on traditional mining practices.”

“As the leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and incoming President of the Republic, I am deeply committed to working with all stakeholders to chart a new vision for our country’s mining industry. We must ensure that Ghana’s natural resources are managed to benefit all our people, not just a few.”

“Ladies and gentlemen, the small-scale mining sector plays a significant role in our economy— providing livelihoods for thousands of our people and contributing to the development of our nation. It has been both a bedrock of livelihood for many and a source of considerable environmental and safety concerns, as well as concerns about illegal mining activities.”
