The National Intelligence Bureau (NIB)’s decision to conduct an internal survey on the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) choice of running mate for the 2024 elections has drawn criticism from some Ghanaians.
In a series of Facebook posts on Friday, June 21, political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has questioned why the state security agency undertook the survey on an internal NPP matter.
“Who asked the NIB to undertake a survey into an NPP internal partisan matter? What was the motive? Did they use our money and state resources to conduct an NPP internal survey? Is the National Intelligence Bureau a Party Intelligence Bureau?” Gyampo wrote.
He added that the party’s presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, like Nana Akufo-Addo, must be allowed to choose his own running mate without imposition from the party.
“It doesn’t matter whose name gets mentioned. The most important thing is DMB must be allowed to choose his running mate, just as NADAA was allowed to do same. The party must not impose anyone on him. He has a mind of his own!” Gyampo said.
The professor questioned whether the NIB would have leaked its report if it showed a different preferred candidate, like Asiedu Nketiah of the opposition NDC.
“Running mate selection is the choice of the flagbearer. Stop forcing people on DMB!” Gyampo asserted.
This comes after the survey of New Patriotic Party members showed Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh, known widely as NAPO, is the overwhelming preference to be the running mate of NPP presidential candidate Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2024 elections.
