Deputy Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Malik Basintale, has criticised the selection of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the running mate to NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, calling it uninspiring and unlikely to boost the NPP’s electoral fortunes.

Basintale expressed his disapproval, stating that NAPO is the last person the NPP should consider as a running mate for its flagbearer.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), chose Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, as his running mate, a decision endorsed by the majority caucus in Parliament and NPP executives.

In an interview on Eyewitness News, Mr Basintale criticised NAPO’s track record, pointing to his tenures as Minister of Education and Minister of Energy as periods marked by poor performance.

“He is not a viable candidate. He brings nothing on board. I have repeatedly said that he is the last nail to hit the casket. Look, if you tie a donkey cart to a dead donkey, he cannot go to Savelugu; he will continue to be in Accra,” he stated.

The National Council (NEC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will meet on Thursday, July 4, with the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to discuss his choice of running mate ahead of the December 7 general elections.

Dr. Bawumia is expected to defend his choice of Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, and explain why he is the best fit to be his running mate.
