Former President and 2024 NDC flagbearer John Mahama has voiced grave concerns about threats to democracy in Ghana, citing the recent assassination attempt on former United States President Donald Trump.
In a statement on Tuesday, July 16, Mahama referenced the incident in which the Republican party’s presumptive nominee was shot and wounded at a campaign rally near Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13.
“What happened in Pennsylvania makes me think even more about the upcoming elections in our country and what we must do to have free, peaceful elections and a smooth transition,” Mahama said.
Ghana prides itself as a beacon of democracy in Africa, but Mahama warned that “justice and freedom are constructs that we depend on ourselves to preserve.”
Calling for “eternal vigilance,” he stated that Ghanaians “must exercise eternal vigilance to protect our precious possessions of justice and freedom.”
The NDC flagbearer raised alarm over “the politicisation of the Electoral Commission, the Supreme Court, and other state institutions involved in the December elections.”
“These are developments that do not inspire confidence that the will of the people would be allowed to prevail,” Mahama stressed in his statement.
The former president argued that maintaining “peace and decorum” is crucial amid Ghana’s challenges.
As the nation seeks to “rebuild our shattered economy,” national unity is imperative, he said.
Unless addressed, the threats, according to Mr. Mahama, could undermine Ghanaians’ right “to express their sovereign will” through “free elections.”
