Flagbearer of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has pledged to abolish the controversial Electronic Levy (E-Levy).
The NDC flagbearer has also pledged to abolish the tax on bet winnings if he emerges victorious in the upcoming December 7 polls.
Mr. Mahama whose promises are geared toward revamping the country’s economic landscape, was speaking during a town hall meeting with residents of Bukom, in Accra, on Monday, 12 August as part of his ongoing campaign efforts.
He criticised the E-Levy, labelling it a failed initiative that has not met its revenue targets while imposing an unnecessary financial burden on the average Ghanaian.
“The E-Levy has not only underperformed but has also added to the economic hardships of our people,” Mr. Mahama asserted.
Touching on the tax on bet winnings, Mr. Mahama argued that it unfairly targets individuals who are already facing financial difficulties.
“Those who turn to betting as a means of survival should not be further burdened with taxes on their small winnings,” he stated.
