The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has strongly defended the party’s decision to protest against the Electoral Commission (EC).
Speaking during a community engagement as part of phase two of his Greater Accra regional tour, Mr. Mahama highlighted the importance of ensuring a credible and transparent voters’ register to guarantee peace during and after the elections.
He called on Ghanaians to back the NDC’s efforts to secure a fair electoral process.
“Our issues with the Electoral Commission are not because we don’t like the commissioners or the EC. Our issue with the Electoral Commission is that we want peace during and after the election,” Mr. Mahama explained.
He further explained that the NDC’s push for accountability from the EC is crucial to fostering confidence in the electoral process.
Mr. Mahama stressed that the only way to ensure the EC performs its duties effectively is through public pressure.
“And the only way we can get the EC to do its job is to pressure the EC to do it. That is why on the 17th of this month, next Tuesday, we are organising a demonstration at the EC office,” he stated.
Mr. Mahama urged all Ghanaians, not just NDC supporters, to join the protest. He described it as a collective effort to demand action from the EC and ensure a peaceful and transparent election.
“That demonstration is not only for the NDC, it is for all Ghanaians who are willing to join. We will tell the EC to sit up and do its work properly, so we can have a peaceful election. That’s the purpose of the demonstration,” he concluded.
The protest, scheduled for Tuesday, 17 September 2024, aims to push the EC to address the issues raised by the NDC regarding the voters’ register.
