The Running Mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has appealed to traditional leaders to support the NDC’s demand for accountability from the Electoral Commission (EC) ahead of the December polls.
Speaking at the grand durbar of chiefs and people of Axim, as part of this year’s Kundum festival, Professor Opoku-Agyemang pointed out the importance of ensuring fair and credible elections.
The NDC has raised red flags over illegal transfers in the provisional register, arguing that such actions could jeopardize the fairness of the 2024 elections.
Despite calls for an independent forensic audit of the provisional voters’ register, the Electoral Commission has dismissed the request.
In response, the NDC has scheduled a nationwide protest for Tuesday, September 17, 2024, to increase pressure on the EC to permit an audit of the voter register.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang urged the EC to guarantee the integrity of the electoral process, saying that it was crucial to maintaining peace before, during, and after the election.
She said there was a need for unity and tolerance as the country approaches the December elections, expressing confidence in Ghanaians’ ability to elect a servant leader in John Mahama, who will prioritize the welfare and development of all citizens in the country.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang promised the next NDC government would not associate with those involved in illegal mining practices.
She encouraged the youth to reject violence and assured the country of NDC’s commitment to peaceful elections.
She said the focus of the NDC is to win the December elections through legitimate means, not through violence or intimidation.
