The flag bearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, says the party is not calling on the Electoral Commission (EC) to conduct a forensic audit of the voter register for the 2024 general elections because the party hates the commissioners at the EC.
Rather, he said, the call was to ensure the credibility of the voters register and also ensure that the will of voters are protected.
“Our issues with the Electoral commission are not because we don’t like the commissioners or the EC. Our issues with the Electoral Commission are because we want peace during and after the election so that all of us can have confidence in the electoral process,” he said.
Speaking to party supporters during a campaign tour in Accra, the former President said the only way to get the EC to do its work well “is to put pressure on the commission to do it.”
He encouraged all Ghanaians to join the party’s planned September 17 protest meant to put pressure on the EC to accept to conduct an independent forensic audit of the voters register.
Meanwhile, the founder of policy think tank, Imani Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, in a radio interview with Accra-based 3FM on Monday, September 16, 2024, added his voice to the call to get the EC to conduct a forensic audit of the voters register.
According to him, the EC has nothing to lose should it conduct the forensic audit.
“You can’t trust this EC at all”, he said, adding that all recent Afrobarometer reports had shown that the EC is one of the least trusted public institutions in the country.
