Mr Alan Kyerematen, Founder of the Movement for Change and Independent Presidential Candidate, has urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to address the growing calls for a forensic audit of the voters’ register before the December 2024 general elections.
Mr Kyerematen highlighted the escalating concerns from political parties, particularly the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), regarding the accuracy of the electoral roll.
In a recent interview aired on Accra 100.5 FM’s 6:00 AM on Monday, September 15, 2024, Mr Kyerematen emphasized the crucial role of the EC in ensuring free and fair elections, asserting that public trust in the electoral system relies on addressing these issues.
“The Electoral Commission has the mandate to conduct free and fair elections, and if concerns are raised about the process, they have to clear any doubts in the people’s minds,” Mr Kyerematen stated.
The NDC has identified specific discrepancies in the voters’ register, leading to increased calls for an audit.
Mr Kyerematen stressed that the EC must demonstrate its commitment to transparency by directly addressing these concerns.
“For the sake of ensuring the integrity of the elections, the EC must respond to the specific cases of irregularities in the voters’ register.
This would enhance the commission’s credibility,” he added.
Mr Kyerematen questioned the EC’s hesitation to conduct the requested audit, arguing that such a step would strengthen public confidence in the election results.
“Why resist? The EC claims they’ve addressed the concerns but we need to eliminate all reasonable doubt.
A credible voters’ register is essential,” he insisted.
He also acknowledged the EC’s strong track record in managing elections across Africa but stressed that maintaining this reputation requires ongoing efforts to ensure transparency.
Mr Kyerematen reiterated that a forensic audit is the most effective way to confirm the integrity of the voters’ register.
