A professor of environmental health and sanitation at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Esi Awurah, says Ghana’s ecosystems have been severely polluted and require urgent intervention.

According to her, many water bodies in the country have been polluted, and immediate action is necessary.

Prof Awurah pointed out that polluted water bodies are being used for food preparation, which poses significant health risks.

Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Dr Clifford Braimah, has warned that Ghana may soon face a severe water crisis if urgent measures are not implemented to address the growing inefficiencies in water treatment.

Speaking at the National Democratic Congress (NDC) women’s manifesto launch, Prof Awurah said, “Our ecosystem is groaning; it is crying for help because we have abused it.”

“We have destroyed all our water bodies. There is no water. I went around, and I have seen that the waters have been polluted, and we are taking it indirectly. Where is the water that was used in preparing the kenkey you bought?” he quizzed.

Prof Awurah stated that their research has revealed that the vegetables being consumed contain mercury.

She added that deformities in living beings are occurring, yet unfortunately, the government is not paying attention to these issues.

“My prayer is that we, as women, would stand up. Look, if there is no water, it is the woman who suffers. The woman has to make sure that there is water, but there is no water, and the surface water we are seeing is going underground. Don’t think your borehole is clean enough.”
