National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi has argued that the only way Ghana can win the fight against illegal mining (galamsey) is for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government to be kicked out of power.
Illegal mining has become a menace in the country in recent years, causing devastation that has destroyed not just lands and forest reserves but river bodies as well.
Amid calls for government to put in place measures to address galamsey, many have proposed a national consensus for all political parties to support the fight against galamsey.
According to Sammy Gyamfi, although the NDC is against galamsey, a national consensus is not the solution to address the havoc being caused.
He insists that the NPP government must first be kicked out of power.
“What we need now is not a national consensus. What we need now is to kick them out. We are seeing an open endorsement of the alarming levels of illegal mining by the NPP. You guys have become so depraved; you have lost it and it’s a tragedy,” Sammy Gyamfi said during a discussion on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV.
In his submission, the NDC National Communications Officer assured that when John Dramani Mahama is elected President he will address the galamsey menace.
He said under Mahama’s next administration, Ghanaians will be allowed to mine but will have to do so responsibly.
“We in the NDC we have said we are not against mining but we are against illegal mining, we are against irresponsible mining and even though we want power we have said that we will ban mining in forest reserves. That should tell you something. President Mahama cares about lives, he cares about our environment and he won’t sacrifice that on the altar of politics,” Sammy Gyamfi said.
