The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has added his voice to the ongoing calls from the public for a ban on illegal mining activities in the country.
In a post on his Facebook page, Alban Bagbin lamented the current situation in the country, highlighting the destruction of water bodies and the environment by individuals or groups licensed to operate their mining activities legally.
Attaching an old picture of himself and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, along with other personalities, in his post, he asserted that their good intentions to build and develop the country must prevail over unpatriotic acts and interests, emphasizing that the country deserves better.
Alban Bagbin also condemned the silencing and arrest of anti-galamsey protesters who have spoken out against illegal mining activities.
“We started off with good intentions to help build this country. We cannot grow to be the ones that destroy it by holding on to power while the environment is destroyed by people who are supposed to be licenced miners; and at the same time crash voices that speak up against it. Ghana deserves better!” he posted.
Protests against illegal mining activities have been held continuously over the past few weeks, with Organised Labour and other prominent organizations threatening to embark on strike actions to pressure the government to declare a state of emergency in mining areas.
