The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has launched a scathing attack on Hawa Koomson, the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East and Minister for Fisheries, labelling her “a candidate for jail.”

During a campaign tour of the Awutu Senya East constituency on Friday, Gyamfi accused Koomson of presiding over widespread corruption during her time as Minister for Special Development Initiatives. He pointed to the government’s poorly executed One Village, One Dam initiative, which he claimed resulted in significant financial losses to the state.

The One Village, One Dam initiative, a flagship program of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, aimed to promote all-season farming through the construction of irrigation dams, especially in the Northern and Savannah regions. However, the program has been marred by poor execution, with numerous dugouts that fail to retain sufficient water for farming or livestock, rendering them ineffective.

Gyamfi argued that the programme’s failure and the incomplete or poorly constructed dams represent a gross misuse of public funds.

He added that the budget allocated for each dam, GHS250,000, was insufficient, a point previously acknowledged by Koomson herself. Despite this, reports of financial irregularities and the unusable state of many dams have raised serious concerns.

Gyamfi asserted that Hawa Koomson’s management of the project has caused a huge financial loss to the state, for which she should face charges of willfully causing financial loss. He also indicated that under a future NDC government led by John Dramani Mahama, the party would initiate “Operation Recover All Loot” (ORAL) to recover misappropriated public funds and prosecute corrupt officials of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration.

He vowed that the next NDC administration would hold Hawa Koomson and other officials accountable for any misuse or misapplication of public funds, promising to restore integrity and recover the nation’s lost resources.
