Social justice activist Felicity Nelson has criticised President Akufo-Addo for what she describes as inconsistencies between his words and actions in the fight against illegal mining, known as galamsey.
Speaking on JoyNews’ *Newsfile* on Saturday, October 12, she pointed out that despite the president’s strong rhetoric on protecting Ghana’s environment, his government’s actions have not matched his statements.
Madam Nelson referenced President Akufo-Addo’s earlier remarks that he cares more about the next generation than the next election, suggesting that the president’s commitment to safeguarding the environment for future generations is questionable.
She noted that while the president’s words were meant to convey a sense of urgency in addressing environmental issues, the continued prevalence of galamsey indicates a lack of decisive action.
The activist further argued that the government’s failure to effectively tackle galamsey raises doubts about its dedication to the well-being of Ghanaians, especially as the devastation caused by illegal mining continues to harm water bodies, farmlands, and forests.
Madam Nelson called for more genuine efforts and transparency in the government’s approach to ending galamsey, noting that mere words are not enough to address the crisis.
Felicity Nelson urged President Akufo-Addo and his administration to take stronger and more consistent measures against galamsey to protect the environment and future generations.
She emphasised that actions, not promises, will determine the success of the fight against illegal mining.
“He speaks very well but his actions are not consistent with the things that he does because if he did, he is not contesting this election and should have dealt with this galamsey menace,” she stated.
