The Member of Parliament for North Tongu in the Volta Region, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has reminded the Volta River Authority (VRA) and government that the thousands of Ghanaian citizens displaced in last year’s Akosombo and Kpong dam spillage have not been fully compensated.

He stressed that resident of the three Tongu areas are ready to face any consequences as they are doing whatever it takes for Volta River Authority and government to immediately ensure that victims of the flooding situation are fully paid compensation.

Speaking at media launch of the Tongu Chiefs Union at Juapong, Mr. Ablakwa lamented that hundreds of these displaced citizens are still living in tents and schools without much attention, thereby worsening their plight as people who are really indeed needing help.

The North-Tongu MP said the slow pace of government and the VRA towards not only resettling victims of the flooding situation but to really ensure that they are fully compensated for them to realize their dreams.

The three Tongu districts comprising areas such as Dorfor, Fodzoku, Volo, Mafi, Battor, Mepe, Fievie and Agave were all affected by the disaster. He said they would resist attempts by the powers that be to deny the victims what is due them.

Mr. Ablakwa commended the chiefs for the initiative to come together as a united front. He said that would ultimately help to bring the needed development to the entire Tongu community.

The MP noted that the grand inauguration of the Tongu Chiefs Union has brought to an end several years of relentless efforts of the chiefs and queen mothers of the Tongu State to forge ahead in unity, total peace and with one voice for the full development of the 13 traditional areas across the three Tongu constituencies.

The President of the newly inaugurated Tongu Chiefs Union and Paramount Chief of Sokpoe traditional area, Torgbui Kadzi Zogah pledged on behalf of the chiefs to work in collaboration with the MPs and other relevant development-oriented organizations to ensure accelerated growth of Tongu.

Torgbui Zogah disclosed that effective and efficient plans would be put in place to settle all land and chieftaincy disputes that have bedeviled the Tongu community.

The event was attended not only by the traditional leaders themselves but also the citizens as well as heads of department and agencies, Service Commanders from the three districts were not left out.

The rich cultural values and traditions of the Tongu State were on full display at the function as they drum, dance to melodious songs from the Tongu areas.

The MPs for the North and Central Tongu Constituencies, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Gabby Hottordze respectively, as well as the Parliamentary Candidate for the governing NPP in North Tongu, were present.
