Henry Osei Akoto, a former National Organiser contender of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has accused the Akufo-Addo administration of purposely selling off state assets to his cronies, associates, and members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Reacting to the ‘Hands off Our Hotels’ demonstration held on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, he declared it as a success and urged the President to stop selling off state properties to his people.
Demonstrators on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, gathered at the frontage of the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra to protest against the sale of a 60 percent stake in four hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to Rock City Hotel, owned by Food and Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong.
The demonstrators, led by the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, asked the President to immediately halt the transaction.
The hotels in question are Labadi Beach Hotel, La Palm Royal Beach Resort, Elmina Beach Resort, Ridge Royal Hotel, Busua Beach Resort, and Trust Lodge Hotel.
In response to the protest’s success, Henry Osei Akoto called out the administration, accusing the president of an unprecedented sale of state assets.
He noted that the president has successfully run the economy into a mess, mismanaged our resources, engaged in corruption, and is now engaging in the sale of state assets.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 97.5FM, he said that despite these evils, everyone who previously criticised the previous administration is quiet, adding that the media is no longer interested in exposing the evils of Akufo-Addo.
“The demonstration was a success.” The people called on the government led by Nana Addo and the Bawumia administration to know that they will no longer sit idly by and allow them to sell our state assets to themselves. I want Bryan Acheampong to listen to solid advice. We will not sit by and enable him to purchase these hotels. Contrary to perceptions that hotels are losing money, they are actually making significant profits. Go browse at the books in the Labadi Beach Hotel. They are earning massive profits. So, how could we sell these profitable hotels to a political appointee of this administration for such a low price?
Are we going to sit down and let President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia sell our state assets to themselves? Look at what happened to the Trade Fair Centre. They have destabilised the economy and have decided to sell our state assets to themselves. Akufo-Addo is ruining the country, yet everyone remains quiet. The media has likewise remained quiet. Those that report on these topics do not devote enough time to them. They tell the stories once, then abandon them and move on to the next. The unprecedented atrocities of this corrupt regime began in 2017, but the people have had enough and will oppose the sale of these hotels,” he added.
