The government of Ghana under President Nana Akufo-Addo has come under scrutiny for contradictory posture towards the safety of the country’s natural resources.
In a social media post on Monday, September 2, Sulemana Braimah, Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa noted the Akufo-Addo administration spends money annually on their “greening Ghana” campaign.
However, he claims the same government has been allocating forest reserves to New Patriotic Party (NPP) cronies to engage in mining activities.
“Each year, the Akufo-Addo gov’t spends money on what it calls greening Ghana. But the same gov’t has been busily giving out forest reserves to party cronies to destroy through mining,” Mr. Braimah wrote.
His remarks come ahead of an impending expose by the Fourth Estate—an investigative journalism portal run by MFWA.
The investigative piece dubbed ‘Forest Invasion’ seeks to unveil individuals and companies behind the rush for mining in Ghana’s protected forest reserves.

There are growing concerns among environmental activists and other stakeholders about the massive degradation of the country’s forest cover due to illegal mining activities, commonly known as “galamsey”.
