Some Members of Parliament (MPs) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have criticised the recent ministerial reshuffle.

The Ranking Member on the Health Committee of Parliament, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, claimed that the reshuffle was solely for electoral votes and not because the government wanted a better team to handle governance.

Speaking to JoyNews on February 14, he said “If you look at the reshuffle they have done, it is not about the good people of this country. It is about elections.

“If you could see through it carefully, you will realise that those who have lost the elections will get a way to give way to those who have won primaries to go and contest elections to enhance their chances in their constituencies. It is not really about  the people of this country.”

He explained that it was left with about nine months to the election and nothing really could be done to change some mistakes in key ministries including the Health Ministry.

“It is about nine months, what are they coming to do? Absolutely nothing. If indeed, he wanted to sack  Agyeman-Manu he should have done it during Sputnik investigation. He went to Kwaku Agyeman Manu’s constituency and made a mockery of the committee. So it is not about the good people, it is clearly about electoral fortunes,” he added.

North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa also stated that it was late for the reshuffle as there was not enough time for new appointees to correct and restore the ailing economy.

He argued that if President Akufo-Addo wanted to restore the economy, he would have made these changes when the citizens had demanded it.

“Honestly, it is a little too late. Many Ghanaians had expected that this non-performing team which has delivered the worst economic crisis in living memory, would be changed. I don’t recall any time in our history that we had to go through financial haircuts and Domestic Debt Exchange Programme that we have been declared bankrupt, that all the rating agencies from Moddy to Fitch have downgraded us and given us junk status.

“We have defaulted. You have Members of Parliament in an unprecedented move on the ruling party side all coming together. At a point, you heard the majority leader say that now all of them say that the Finance Minister should go

“To put it mildly, what really do you expect in these dying hours under a lame-duck President?” he added.

President Akufo-Addo announced a ministerial reshuffle on February 14.

Key individuals including Health Minister Kwaku Agyeman Manu, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, among others exited their various positions.
