National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has clarified the rationale behind his controversial statement during the inauguration of the party’s running mate, Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang at the Universality of Professional Studies in Accra.
Mr Asiedu Nketiah expressed grave concern about some party members who have started lobbying for governmental appointments and positions when the elections have not been held.
He thus called on party members and supporters to exercise restraint in attempting to share the game until the hunting is done.
This statement made by General Chairman was received with varied interpretations.
But speaking to Kwame Nkrumah Tikese on Okay FM’s “Ade Akye Abia” on Tuesday, May 7, he noted that his remarks had been taken out of context and blown out of proportion by the members of the New Patriotic Party.
The National Chairman pointed out this latest development in the party poses a great threat to it’s fortunes because of the potential friction it could trigger.
Some persons were of the view that the party’s chairman could have said it in private, but Mr. Nketiah had a varied opinion.
According to Mr. Asiedu Nketia, the best opportune time was when he had all the party supporters and sympathisers listening and watching him.
‘’This issue of lobbying for political appointments is destroying the fortunes of the party at the constituencies and party branches. I am on the grounds moving to and fro to address the issues that have engulfed our party at those levels. The issues on the grounds are not issues we have to joke with. Things that have a potentially negative effect on the party must be nipped in the bud,’’ he highlighted.
The National Chairman further noted that, there are opinion polls that have projected a landslide win for the NDC come December 7, but ‘’it doesn’t mean the leadership and all party members should be complacent. If we don’t advice against being complacent, this election will elude us,’’ he added.
He cited previous instances where same phenomena led to the abysmal performance of the party in a particular election year all because party members were busily lobbying for governmental appointments.
‘’This is not the first time I am making this statement. This is something that is dear to my heart. If we don’t give extensive advice to people, we will be disappointed. Some regional executives are threatening some party members with political appointment,’’ he stressed.
