The Institute of Democratic Governance (IDEG), along with the Civil Forum Initiative, has echoed the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) demand for the Electoral Commission (EC) to conduct an audit of the Voter Register ahead of the December 7, 2024, general elections.

Dr. Angela Dwamena Aboagye, spokesperson for the group, stated that the call for an audit is not solely for the NDC but for the benefit of all Ghanaians as the country prepares for the elections.

She believes that an audit would enhance confidence among citizens and stakeholders involved in the electoral process.

Dr. Aboagye urged the EC to agree to an independent audit of the electoral roll, emphasizing that they are not seeking a forensic audit but a more reasonable approach to ensure transparency and satisfaction for all parties involved.

She made these remarks during an interview on Accra-based Joy FM on Wednesday, September 18, 2024.

In related news, former President John Dramani Mahama praised the unity and determination exhibited by Ghanaians advocating for a transparent electoral process.

He expressed gratitude to NDC executives, the Elections Directorate, and the dedicated supporters who played a crucial role in the recent demonstrations.

Mr. Mahama highlighted that the demonstration was more than just a call for an audit; it was a plea for justice, fairness, and the safeguarding of democratic rights.

He underscored the importance of the Electoral Commission in maintaining the trust of the Ghanaian people, warning against any actions that could undermine this trust.
