A chartered economist has criticized the economic management approach of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President and flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), likening it to a series of remedial classes.
Mr Bernard Oduro Takyi (BOT) argued that Dr. Bawumia treats economic management as if it were a remedial course, where a lack of commitment is excused by the expectation of a second chance to improve at the remedial level.
He questioned why, as Head of the Economic Management Team (EMT), Dr. Bawumia allowed the economy to deteriorate to the point where he now promises tax amnesty to businesses.
Under his watch, many businesses struggled and relocated to neighbouring countries due to economic difficulties.
In an interview with Accra 100.5 FM’s mid-day news on Monday, August 19, 2024, BOT criticized Dr. Bawumia’s economic management, citing its impact on pensioners who suffered investment losses due to economic mismanagement—a situation he says is unprecedented in Ghana’s history.
He urged Ghanaians to be cautious about voting for Dr. Bawumia, suggesting that his promises are merely rhetoric and will not address the real issues.
BOT argued that Dr. Bawumia’s approach reflects a lack of seriousness about economic management, based on the belief that Ghanaians will vote him into office to rectify his previous failures.
He warned that if Ghanaians make the mistake of electing Dr Bawumia, they will be met with more empty promises rather than effective economic solutions.
He emphasized that politics should be a contest of ideas and performance, and if a candidate fails to deliver results, there should be a referendum on their effectiveness.
