Peter Nortsu Kotoe, Member of Parliament for Akatsi North Constituency, called out a statement by Majority Chief Whip Frank Annor Dompreh as false. Annor Dompreh had claimed that the government released GH¢80 million to WAEC.

Hon. Nortsu Kotoe, who is the Ranking Member on the Education Committee in Parliament, accused Annor Dompreh of spreading propaganda to avoid the truth.

Annor Dompreh informed Parliament that the Finance Ministry had released GH¢80 million to WAEC for the BECE.

This statement followed concerns from Yusif Sulemana, the MP for Bole-Bamboi, about the government’s unpaid debt to WAEC.

Initially, WAEC had only received GH₵2.3 million out of the GH₵95.83 million needed. WAEC requested at least 50% of the total amount to conduct the examination and additional funds to process and release the results.

The BECE is scheduled to take place from July 8 to July 15, 2024, at centers nationwide. In an interview with Nana Dogbe on Ahotor FM‘s morning show, Peter Nortsu Kotoe clarified that WAEC received a warrant for only about half of the total amount on Friday afternoon, not the GH¢80 million claimed by the Majority Chief Whip.

Hon. Kotoe criticized the government for neglecting the challenges faced by basic schools due to its Free SHS policy.

He stated that since the policy’s implementation, there has been little focus on improving the quality of basic education, which is negatively impacting teaching and learning at that level.
