David Kumi Addo, Executive Director of Care for Free and Fair Elections and Good Governance, has requested that the Electoral Commission (EC) consider conducting a forensic audit of the voter register.
The civil society organisation leader said they joined the ‘Enough is Enough’ demonstration being organised by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) because the issues raised are genuine issues that, if left unaddressed, will disenfranchise registered voters.
Speaking in an interview on Frontline on Rainbow radio 87.5FM, he indicated that the demonstration was necessary because it will help preserve Ghana’s democracy, stability, growth, and peace.
He asserted that the discrepancies identified in the register are so great that they can affect the entire outcome of the elections.
David Kumi Addo stated that there are over 240,000 persons that have been affected by the discrepancies, including the illegal voter transfers done by some officials of the EC.
He said the EC that has claimed to have addressed these infractions through the voter exhibition exercise cannot be trusted considering their commentary on the matter.
”The multitude of infractions demands attention and accountability. The NDC has outlined these concerns, and as Ghanaians not aligned with any political party, we have a stake in this matter. To demonstrate good faith, the EC should welcome a forensic audit if it is innocent of wrongdoing. The EC’s approach to addressing issues will determine its credibility in facilitating free, fair, and transparent elections. Unfortunately, our trust in the EC’s transparency has been eroded, which is why we are pushing for an independent forensic audit of the voter register,’ as communicated to Kwabena Agyapong.
Regarding the EC’s request for the NDC to submit evidence, he questioned the commission’s credibility and transparency due to conflicting claims made by its commissioners. Dr. Bossman Asare, Director of Electoral Services, appeared on TV, disputing the NDC’s allegations and labeling them as unfounded, while Deputy Commissioner Samuel Tettey claimed all issues had been resolved. This raises concerns about the EC’s trustworthiness. As an organization advocating for voting rights, Care Ghana emphasizes the importance of ensuring every eligible voter can cast their ballot, and will not tolerate any attempts to disenfranchise Ghanaians through a flawed electoral register.
