A member of the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament, Edward Bawa, has lampooned the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

The MP for Bongo asserted that ECG’s stubbornness is responsible for the frequent nationwide power outages experienced in the country.

Speaking in an interview on JoyNews’ AM Show on Tuesday, April 9, Mr. Bawa argued that ECG’s refusal to provide a load-shedding timetable forces the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) to carry out load-shedding independently.

He claimed that this situation is resulting in damage of equipment and machinery by power consumers.

“ECG’s failure to issue a load-shedding timetable is the consequence of the consistent total blackout that we have been experiencing in the country most times because usually the person in charge of your network in this case, GRIDCo will automatically shed load by taking off the areas with his highest load demand to ensure its equipments are safe,” he said.

Additionally, Mr. Bawa emphasised that the current power crisis is likely to persist for awhile.

“I think that we are not coming out of this crisis soon because it is an issue of finance and unless the government deliberately looks for money to solve this problem, it is not going anywhere.”

In response, ECG has attributed its inability to fulfill all load management requests to the delayed notification from GRIDCo.

The power distribution company stated that it needs advanced notice of 3 to 4 hours to effectively implement such requests.

Recently, the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) reported the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to the Energy Minister for failing to issue a load-shedding timetable for customers during the ongoing power outages.

GRIDCo said that the National System Control Centre (NSCC) has requested ECG to provide a timetable due to the unavailability of the maximum grid capacity and warns that ECG’s reluctance to comply with this request poses a significant risk to the stability of the national grid.

In a petition submitted to the Minister on Thursday, March 28, GRIDCo highlighted the potential consequences of ECG’s actions, warning of possible disruptions in power supply for customers.
