An opinion poll by independent research firm Global InfoAnalytics has found that Ghanaians’ confidence in the country’s electoral management body and police force has declined months ahead of the December 7 general elections.
The poll, which sampled over 7,900 registered voters across Ghana between June 21-30, 2024, revealed a drop in the percentage of voters who have confidence in the Electoral Commission (EC) and Ghana Police Service to organize a free, fair, and orderly poll respectively.
On the EC, the survey found that while 59% of voters expressed confidence in the commission’s ability to conduct credible elections in April, that figure has fallen to 53% in the latest July poll.
“The poll saw voters who have confidence in the police to maintain order during the elections declining from 64% in April 2024 to 58% in July while those who have no confidence jumps from 28% to 33%,” noted a section of the report.
This comes after the pocket of violence witnessed during the recent limited voter registration and transfer exercises which has resurrected concerns of potential election-day conflicts.
Ghana prepares to choose a new president and parliamentarians on December 7, in an election widely predicted to be the most keenly contested in the Fourth Republic’s history.
