The Paramount Chief of the Bongo Traditional Area, Naba Baba Salifu Atamale Lemyaarum, has called on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to reward the loyalty of the Bongo constituents with significant development projects if the party wins the upcoming election.
According to the chief, even though the past NDC governments have implemented projects in the constituency, those projects are not enough to compensate the people for their loyalty to the NDC since 1992 when they occupied the Bongo seat.
“The people of Bongo have been very loyal to the NDC since 1992. Bongo has never swayed. We have also been grateful to you for the development projects you provided this district over the years when you were in power, right from former president Rawlings, Mills, and to you [Mahama].
“But I must say that Bongo deserves better than that because of the loyalty of the people. I am not supposed to play politics but I will tell you whether the people like you or not.”
Naba Atamale made these remarks during a courtesy call by the NDC flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, at his palace. The chief outlined key infrastructural needs that he believes should be prioritized by the next NDC government.
Naba Lemyaarum specifically requested the establishment of a teacher training college, and a district hospital, if the NDC wins the next election.
The construction of the Bongo-Namoo road linking Burkina Faso, he emphasized would boost the revenue drive of the Bongo District Assembly.
Naba Lemyaarum also appealed to Mr Mahama to consider appointing the outgoing MP, Edward Bawa, the NDC regional secretary, Donatus Akamugre, and other competent party members from Bongo if the NDC wins the 2024 elections.
In response, Mr Mahama acknowledged the chief’s requests and assured him that the party would consider them seriously if elected.
