The National Democratic Congress (NDC) held a nationwide protest on Tuesday, 17 September 2024, to highlight alleged discrepancies in the provisional voters’ register.

Thousands of NDC supporters, alongside independent candidates and other political parties, took to the streets in peaceful demonstrations across the country.

In Ho, the capital of the Volta Region, hundreds of protesters, dressed in red and black, marched with signs reading: “Voters are suffering” and “Peace starts with a credible register.”

Among the prominent figures leading the protest were NDC Volta Regional Chairman Mawutor Agbavitor, Regional Secretary James Gunu, and several Members of Parliament.

Presenting the party’s petition to the EC’s Volta Regional Director, Eric Dzakpasu, the NDC Volta Regional Chairman emphasised the importance of transparency.

“All we want from the EC is to understand that Ghanaians are calling for a forensic audit of the voter register to enable us to have a peaceful election,” he stated.

Mr. Agbavitor further stressed: “Jean Mensah, you are beating a war drum as a woman, and we don’t want it.”

The EC acknowledged receipt of the petition, with Mr. Dzakpasu promising to forward it to the national office for further action.

MP for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, speaking to Class News noted that the demand for a credible voter register isn’t unprecedented.

“In 2016, Jean Mensah herself called for an audit when she was with the IEA. We see no reason why this can’t happen now,” he stated.

Mr. Ablakwa urged for a transparent process to ensure a credible election.

Similarly, South Dayi MP Rockson Dafeamekpor urged the youth to rally behind former President John Mahama, citing his commitment to policies like free tertiary education.

“The 24-hour economy policy will create jobs, and John Mahama is the only person with the vision to make it happen,” Mr. Dafeamekpor said.

Meanwhile, Ho Central parliamentary candidate Eric Edem Kpotosu revealed discrepancies in voter transfers within his constituency, where the number of registrants allegedly jumped from 1,567 to 5,697.

He called on the EC to correct such anomalies before the election.

Supporters, including traders like Juliet Amenyedzi, expressed frustration with the EC.

“As a woman, Jean Mensah should have the heart of a mother and listen to the voices of Ghanaians,” Ms. Amenyedzi said, echoing the widespread sentiment for a credible election.
