The National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus in Parliament has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining its newly declared “Majority status”, despite the Supreme Court’s ruling that stayed the Speaker of Parliament’s order declaring four seats vacant.

The confusion over the leadership of the House arose on Thursday, October 17, after Speaker Alban Bagbin ruled that three NPP seats and one NDC seat were vacant, shifting the balance of power in Parliament.

With the NDC now claiming 136 seats against the NPP’s 135, the party declared itself the Majority.

However, the Supreme Court intervened on Friday, October 18, ordering a stay of execution on Bagbin’s ruling.

The court directed Parliament to allow the four affected MPs to continue representing their constituencies until the substantive case is resolved.

Despite the court’s decision, the NDC leader Dr Cassiel Ato Forson remains firm in his party’s position.

At a press conference on Sunday, October 20, Dr Forson reiterated that the NDC now holds the Majority caucus in Parliament according to the legislative body’s Standing Orders.

He vowed that the NDC would not relinquish its claim to the Majority, stating that the party would continue to safeguard its status and work towards addressing the pressing issues affecting Ghanaians.
