Ace broadcast journalist, Kwami Sefa Kayi has questioned the loud silence of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo regarding the devastating effect of illegal mining on the environment.

Speaking on “Kokrokoo” morning show on Monday, September 9, 2024, Kwami Sefa Kayi, who is the host of the show on Peace FM, opined that the silence of the President on the illegal mining (galamsey) in the face of actions taken by Otumfuo Osei-Tutu II on the same issues is an indictment on his office as President.

Kwami Sefa Kayi’s statement follows a recent action by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei-Tutu II, in which he destooled three of his Chiefs for carrying out illegal mining activities in their communities in the Ashanti Region.

The Asantehene destooled Gyaasehene of Sabronum, Nana Awua Gyau Atuomi, Sabronum’s Akyeamehene and the Baamuhene, for encouraging the galamseyers.

Adjudicating the case at the Manhyia Palace, Otumfuo said; “I gave the town to you, you could not take care of it. I’ve long been following up on this matter. This is also the report from the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI); your names are clearly mentioned here in this report.”

Kwami Sefa Kayi, reacting to Otumfuo’s actions, said; “Based on reports Otumfuo received regarding those engaged in galamsey activities, he took steps in dealing with the canker. The media has been vociferous on illegal mining in this country. Is the President saying he hasn’t heard it? Erastus Asare Donkor of Multimedia has devoted his life constantly reporting on illegal mining and how our environment is being destroyed by it to the extent of winning Journalist of the Year. Otumfuo heard it and took action. So, is the President saying he hasn’t heard it? If Otumfuo can use the State investigative intelligence like the BNI to carry out an investigation for him, why can’t the President do same?”“So, at the end of the day, as we commend and applaud Otumfuo, it is an indictment on the President, the government in power and our security agencies because if it can be done by the Asantehene, then it could be done by the President who has all the powers at his disposal”, he concluded.
