The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused some executives of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) of complicity in illegal mining popularly known as galamsey which they argue has led to the government’s failure to address the issue effectively.
Earlier this week, Ghana Water Limited (GWL) announced a reduction in water supply for Cape Coast and surrounding communities, citing illegal mining as a major factor affecting its operations and water security.
Speaking during a sectorial breakdown of the NDC’s 2024 manifesto, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, reiterated the party’s pledge to fight the illegal mining menace.
“Only the NDC manifesto is pledging a ruthless combatting of this [illegal mining] menace which poses an existential threat.
“Clearly, when you listen to the Western regional minister, you listen to NPP parliamentary candidates and NPP stalwarts, their regional chairman and all of that, they are complicit, they are neck deep [in the menace].”
