The Member of Parliament for Odododiodoo, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has intimated that the government’s lack of attention on the Sports Ministry is to blame for the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) withdrawal of approval for the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

CAF withdrew its approval for the Baba Yara Stadium Sports due to technical infractions, including an unsuitable playing field on Wednesday, September 11.

Nii Lante Vanderpuye told Selorm Adonoo on The Big Issue on Channel One TV and Citi FM that CAF’s approval withdrawal was not surprising because the government treats the Sports Ministry as though it was “given as a candy to a wailing child.”

“When you put square pegs in round holes, these are the sort of results that you get. You see, sometimes people think that sports is the ministry that should be given as candy to a wailing child so anybody at all can be sent to sports but the truth is, it is the most difficult and most technical ministry because in this country.

“If we are not in a political season, the most important thing for people to talk about is sports and that is why Kwame Nkrumah decided that one of the basic things he was going to use to foster African unity is sports.”

The decision to withdraw approval for the stadium was made after observations made by CAF during the recent Africa Cup of Nations Qualifying match between Ghana and Angola, which was played at the Baba Yara Stadium on September 5th, 2024.

It was determined that the stadium did not meet the required standards for hosting Category 3 international matches.
