The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has stated that no patriotic Ghanaian would justify the revenue assurance contract signed between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML).

He said the Afenyo-Markin-led NPP Majority has no respect for Ghanaians in their attempt to justify the controversial deal.

According to the Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the NDC’s call for the government to make the KPMG audit report on the GRA-SML deal public is baseless.

The NPP majority maintained that the report is an advisory document that guides the president in decision-making, stressing that no wrong had been done.

Addressing a press conference in Accra on Friday, the Effutu lawmaker noted, amongst other things, that it is not within the right of anyone to demand copies of the report.

Furthermore, he argued that in an attempt to ensure transparency and due diligence, the country could end up destroying local businesses while foreign-owned companies thrive within certain sectors.

“Often under the guise of due diligence and ensuring that there is transparency, we often get out of control and destroy Ghanaian companies, whereas foreign ones who operate in certain sectors get a kind of protection that makes them develop their businesses, but often Ghanaian businesses suffer,” he told reporters.

But Sammy Gyamfi disagreed.

“They have no love of country in them,” said Mr. Gyamfi on TV3’s news analysis programme The Key Points on Saturday, May 4.

“No patriotic Ghanaian will or can justify or defend this unacceptable transaction which has occasioned a huge financial loss to the state.

“The reason why you can have the likes of Afenyo-Markin and the NPP majority defend this is because they have no love for country in them and they have no respect for the truth, they have no respect for the people of this country.

“That is it. None of the things they have said make sense; none of the things Afenyo-Markin has said is true,” he emphasised.

According to the NDC communicator, all the justifications Mr. Ayenfo-Markin mounted in his May 3 press conference are “totally contrived.”
