National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi has noted that the country is struggling to end illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey because members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) are involved.

Galamsey has been the top issue in the country in the last few months following various reports which have shed light on how the activities of illegal mining are destroying forest reserves, lands, and water bodies.

Despite calls for government to take steps to ban illegal mining, nothing has happened, leading to multiple anti-galamsey protests.

Speaking on the Good Morning Ghana programme on Metro TV, Sammy Gyamfi has lambasted government, arguing that it is failing to fight galamsey because its members are also galamseyers.

“How can you fight galamsey with galamseyers. They themselves are galamseyers. And we say we need a national consensus. With who? Galamseyers like you? This illegal mining madness going on is not a joke,” Sammy Gyamfi stressed.

The NDC Communicator continued, “I know that mining cannot be the preserve of the multinationals. Ghanaians must be allowed to do mining but they must do so responsibly and legally. We must all be angry at what is going on because it is not about a political party but it’s about all of us.”

Meanwhile, Sammy Gyamfi has urged Ghanaians to vote out the ruling NPP and elect John Dramani Mahama as president.

He has assured that once elected President, John Dramani Mahama will address the galamsey menace.
