Former President John Dramani Mahama has fired back at Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for accusing him of insulting Pastors, Imams, and civil society groups.

Mr. Mahama says that he stated the obvious truth that there is hypocrisy in Ghana.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has taken a swipe at former President John Mahama, accusing him of insulting chiefs, religious leaders, and civil society organisations.

Dr. Bawumia, who is the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), asked Mr. Mahama to be responsible in his utterances, avoid the politics of insults, and stick to the politics of ideas.

Dr. Bawumia stated that his opponent is unhappy because he realises the party will lose the elections because it lacks ideas.

‘’ I think Mahama has realised that he will lose the elections massively, and so he easily gets angry. He has insulted pastors, imams, and CSOs by describing them as hypocrites. Is this the kind of communication healthy? How can you describe them as hypocrites? He has insulted the EC and also described the NPP government as a foolish government. This is not healthy for our politics. This is unprecedented, and it is disappointing that it is coming from a former president. We must have at least some standard of decency in the language we speak as politicians. The election is not about insults. It is about ideas. You only insult when you lack ideas.’’

Mr. Mahama has fired back Bawumia over the comments, stating categorically that “I said that hypocrisy is one of the things drawing our nation back, and I hear my colleague or my opponent describing it as an insult. When you have done such harm to this country and you go and they praise you, is that not hypocrisy? When you have done harm to this country and you go and a priest is praising you, is it not hypocrisy? When you have done harm to this economy and you go and a fetish priest is pouring schnapps on gods and praising you, is it not hypocrisy? If I say that, have I insulted you? I haven’t insulted anybody.’’
