Former Director of the Ghana School of Law, Kwaku Ansah Asare has called on Parliament to impeach President Akufo-Addo for failing to end galamsey after he put his job on the line to end the menace four years ago.

Mr Ansah Asare said this in an interview with 3news.

“This is one good reason the President should have been impeached long ago,” he posited.

He recalled the President made an undertaking at the cost of his job and must leave office if he has not been able to deliver. The law lecturer wondered why President Akufo-Addo has not taken action as, “the people involved are his ministers”.

Kwaku Ansah Asare said Ghanaians are not holding government to the highest standards and therefore get away largely with “impunity.”

“The President is getting away with impunity because he knows there is no one to call him to order,” he bemoaned.

The law lecturer who is known to have sympathies for the NPP proposed 9 key pointers if the party wants to ‘break the 8.’

  1. The President must direct that all galamsey activities must cease with immediate effect, i.e. forthwith, but not later than 13th September 2024.
  2. All galamsey machinery/equipment must be removed from galamsey sites on or before 13th September, 2024.
  1. All foreign nationals involved in galamsey must have their resident permits revoked and repatriated to their home countries within 14 days from today.
  1. The President of the Republic, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces must relieve government appointees involved in galamsey of their duties and/or sack them immediately.
  1. Chiefs and family heads involved in galamsey must be removed from their customary offices or positions.
  1. Break galamsey Now to Break the 8
  1. Ending galamsey is a shared responsibility.
  1. If the President fails to take immediate action to end galamsey, Ghanaians must hold the President accountable by showing the NPP the red card on 7th December 2024.
  1. All the political parties seeking power on 7th December must make commitment to end galamsey within the 1st hundred days of assuming the reins of government or abdicate for fresh elections to be called.
