The running mate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, says the next NDC government would ensure an inclusive government where chiefs would be given their deserved roles.
She said chiefs were key partners for development and that the NDC government would prioritise their inputs in national issues.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang made the remarks when she paid a courtesy call on the chief of Kaneshie, Nii Nikoi Ashalley I, at his residence in Accra during her market tours in Accra on Thursday, August 15, 2024.
She visited the Mallam Atta market; Kaneshie market and Makola market.
The tour was to enable her to interact with the market women as well as to introduce the party’s policies regarding traders and women to them.
During the tour, she met the leadership of the various markets, where she had brief discussions with them.
Prof Opoku-Agyemang was accompanied by some top officials of the party, including former appointees and aspiring parliamentary candidates in the constituencies she visited.
Kaneshie Chief
For his part, the chief of Kaneshie, Nii Ashalley commended the NDC running mate for visiting his palace.
He said since he became a chief for the past 18 years, no presidential or running mate had ever visited him before.
The Kaneshie Mantse said no nation had developed or prospered where its women are relegated to the background, extolling the role of women in keeping homes and nations, stressing that without the key role of women, societies would deteriorate.
For him, any nation that disregarded its women only set itself up for failure.
“We pray you should come. We want to choose the best for the society,” the chief endorsed the ticket of the NDC.
Nii Nikoi Ashalley however charged Prof. Opoku-Agyemang and the flagbearer of the NDC to keep their promises when given the power.
He expressed the concern that the role of chiefs in nation building to some large extent had been taken from them.
