Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, is optimistic that the party will go down in history as the first to have a woman as Vice President.

According to him, since the inception of the Fourth Republic, his running mate Prof Naana Jane Agyemang would be the first woman to ascend to the second-highest office in the land, should the party secure electoral victory.

He stated that an NDC victory would be historic for women holding higher political offices in Ghana, and therefore, he encouraged people to vote for him.

“Women have held positions such as ministers, judges, police, soldiers, drivers, and many others,” he said but noted that the only two positions left for women yet in Ghana are presidents and vice presidents.

“I know in the 7th December elections, our running mate, Prof Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, will make history in the Republic of Ghana as the first Vice President,” he confidently said, urging Ghanaians to vote for the NDC.

Mr. Mahama further expressed his belief that Ghana will have a female president in the near future.

The former president made these comments during a durbar of chiefs and a community engagement at Kwakuanya in the Dormaa West Constituency, as part of day three of his tour of the Bono Region.

At Nkrankwanta, the Chief of the area, Nana Baffour Agyei Ekyea Akombi II, appealed to the NDC flagbearer to consider improving the roads in the constituency and upgrading the educational and health infrastructure, among other needs.

The chief also expressed concern about the high youth unemployment rate and appealed for the creation of jobs to improve the standard of living for the people.

In response, Mr Mahama questioned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government’s claim of constructing 12,000km of roads, pointing out that many roads in the Bono Region remain in poor condition.

He assured the people that, if elected, the NDC would prioritise fixing the roads to facilitate the transport of goods such as cocoa beans and improve security and economic activities in the area.

Additionally, Mr Mahama pledged that an NDC government would establish more Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) schools to equip the youth with self-employable skills.
