The Director of Elections and IT for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has once again criticised the Electoral Commission (EC).

The former Communications Minister stated that the EC commissioners have been grossly incompetent since their appointment.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen program on Wednesday, January 31, Dr Omane Boamah insisted that the EC has not demonstrated the necessary seriousness required for an election year.

He claimed that the Commissioners ignored prudent suggestions from the NDC for an incident-free election and instead engaged in fruitless discussions.

Dr Omane Boamah asserted that the NDC would not agree to any fundamental changes to the country’s electoral processes for the December polls.

“We have written to them (EC) to form a special committee to clean the voter’s register, but it has fallen on deaf ears because it’s not of importance to them.

“Last year’s District Assembly elections were postponed, and they postponed the postponed election in some regions (Ashanti and Eastern) to be specific. Is this a demonstration of competence?”

Dr Omane Boamah emphasised that he is committed to securing the success of the NDC in the December polls and will not take it lightly.

He stated that he took on the role of Director of Elections to deliver positive results for the party, not to provide excuses.

“We will not go into the 2024 elections with the business-as-usual attitude. I didn’t take up this job to joke. I didn’t take up this job to give flimsy excuses at the end of the day.

“I want to make sure that every T is crossed, and I is dotted and so the Mr EC, Madam EC, your incompetence that I have adduced evidence to support does not give us any confidence to believe that you can compound this year with such major reforms.”

This follows a proposal by the EC to change the election date from December 7 to November 7 and the declaration of the day as a holiday during its engagement with political parties at IPAC meetings.

Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has restated its objection to the proposed change in the election date by the Electoral Commission, which is contemplating a shift from December 7 to November 7.

The party stressed its opposition during the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting held on Monday, January 29.

The NDC urged the public to dismiss any conflicting reports.

Additionally, the party revealed its support for altering the date for the 2028 general elections rather.
