Kojo Nhyira, a member of the Greater Accra regional communication team of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has asserted that the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) was significantly expanded under the administration of John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking on Property Daybreak with Anigye Hene Abeiku Yamoah, Nhyira emphasized that it was during Mahama’s tenure in 2012 that the NHIA Act (Act 852) was enacted, transitioning the NHIS from a district-level benefit to a national benefit.

Nhyira acknowledged that the NHIS was initially introduced by former president John Agyekum Kuffour’s NPP administration but pointed out that it initially only covered health needs at the district level, rather than nationally.

He also highlighted the achievements of the Mahama administration in the health sector, including the construction of more training schools and hospitals, which provided job opportunities for nursing training students.

Expressing his disappointment with the current NPP administration under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Nhyira criticized their lack of new hospital constructions over their seven years in power.

He urged Ghanaians to vote for the NDC and John Dramani Mahama in the upcoming elections to ensure the continuation of their development efforts for the betterment of Ghana.
