Bawku Central Member of Parliament(MP) Mahama Ayariga has officially been appointed as the Majority Leader.

Mr Ayariga succeeds Ejumako Enyan Essiam MP, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson.

The Bawku Central MP was tipped for the role following Dr Ato Forson’s appointment as Finance Minister by President John Mahama.

In a statement on Thursday responding to the new role, Mr Ayariga pledged to rigorously pursue the agenda to reset Ghana.

“Their trust must inspire our actions and guide our decisions. It is for them that we will build a prosperous, united, and democratic Ghana,” he said.

The lawmaker thanked his constituents for the confidence reposed in him and assured that he will not fail them.

He further expressed committment to be guided by the illustrious precedents set by former distinguished leaders of their caucus.

“20 years ago, our current Speaker, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin led us. Then Hon. Cletus Avoka, Hon. Benjamin Kunbuor, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, and most recently, Hon. Cassiel Ato Forson. Their leadership styles will remain guideposts,” he noted.

Profile of Mahama Ayariga

Born on May 24, 1974 the lawyer cum politician, he served as Minister of Information and Media Relations, Minister of Youth and Sports under the previous John Dramani Mahama administration.

He also served under the erstwhile late John Evans Atta Mills administration in 2009 as a Presidential Spokesman and later a Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry and Deputy Minister of Education.

Mr Ayariga was born in Bawku in the Upper East and attended school in Ghana, Nigeria, and the United States of America.

He attended Barewa College in Zaria in Kaduna State, Nigeria and holds a Master of Law (LLM) from Harvard Law School in the United States of America and a Bachelor of Law (LLB) from the University of Ghana, Legon.

Mr Ayariga first became the first MP for Bawku Central in January, 2005, until he lost his seat to Adamu Dramani Sakande of the New Patriotic Party in the 2008 elections.

The seat became vacant after Mr Adamu was convicted and jailed for contesting and an election despite having a dual citizenship.

Ayariga recaptured the seat in the 2012 election and has been MP till date.
