The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has pledged to enact the Property Rights of Spouses Bill if he wins the upcoming December elections.
According to him, this law is crucial in safeguarding women’s rights in marriage.
Speaking during the NDC women’s manifesto launch on September 30, he said, “Marriage unites spouses, and in the event of any unfortunate circumstances, properties such as buildings and farmland should be shared equally. No man should have the authority to evict a woman without her receiving her rightful share.”
Additionally, Mr Mahama announced plans to introduce a Domestic Workers Bill aimed at protecting vulnerable workers, predominantly women, from mistreatment.
He explained that this law will ensure protection and accountability for those who exploit domestic workers, putting an end to such abuse.
“These people are not fed, [they are] beaten and not cared for properly. This law will protect them so that there will be an end to the abuse of domestic workers. These laws will be there to deal with such people who maltreat domestic workers,” he said.
