The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has pledged to provide additional support and justice to the victims of the Techiman South shooting incident in the 2020 election should the party come to power.

According to him, he expected a higher amount than what was awarded to the victims as compensation.

He assured that the families of those who lost their lives during the clashes would also receive compensation.

“The compensation given to the victims, I was thinking it would be more than the 275,000 cedis but I acknowledge the court’s decision. However, when the NDC comes to power, we’ll ensure to provide necessary assistance to the victims.”

The Wenchi High Court has ruled that the state must compensate six individuals with GH₵45,000 each for injuries sustained during a shooting at the Techiman South Collation Centre during the 2020 general election.

The incident occurred amid unrest before Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah was declared MP, with security personnel firing shots, resulting in two deaths and several injuries.

The plaintiffs argued that their constitutional right to life was violated, while the state claimed the shots were warning shots.

The court, however, found the use of force unjustified and rejected the state’s defence. The plaintiffs’ request for higher compensation was not granted due to insufficient evidence.

Mr Mahama also expressed his commitment to reopening investigations into the violence that erupted during the disputed election results.

“We would investigate the matter and ensure the perpetrators are brought to book and face the law,” he added.
