A new government under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will implement measures to address Ghana’s growing social and economic challenges, Presidential Candidate of the party, John Dramani Mahama, has said.

He pledged to announce his full cabinet for parliamentary approval within 14 days and appoint the “leanest and most efficient” government in Ghana’s Fourth Republic within the first 90 days.

The former president expressed eagerness to tackle the economic challenges, which he believes the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government had mismanaged, leading to widespread hardship.

“The NDC plans to prepare a home-grown fiscal consolidation programme to guide its administration’s first budget if elected,” he said.

Campaign tour

Speaking at a packed rally in GbetsIle in the Kpone Katamanso constituency, last Thursday, Mr Mahama outlined his “first 120 days social contract with the people of Ghana,” which includes a plan to address the economy through a National Economic Dialogue.

Mr Mahama began a two-day campaign tour of the Greater Accra Region on Thursday, visiting Old Ningo in the Ningo-Prampram constituency, Kpone Katamanso, Tema Central, and ending the day in the Tema East Constituency.

Illegal mining

Regarding illegal mining, Mr Mahama stated that he would address the issue as president but emphasised that it was currently President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s responsibility.

“You are currently the president of Ghana, and it is your responsibility to deal with galamsey now. After January 7, 2025, when Ghanaians have elected me, I will take responsibility and sort out illegal mining,” he said at a rally in Ningo Prampram.

Mr Mahama’s comments was in response to President Akufo-Addo’s call for him to clarify his stance on galamsey.

“It looks like he doesn’t live in this country because I have commented on galamsey extensively. The University of Energy and Natural Resources gave leaders a platform to outline their small-scale mining policy. I outlined NDC’s policy and answered questions for two hours,” he stated.

Elections

Mr Mahama emphasised that the upcoming December 7 elections were crucial for securing a better future for Ghana’s youth, urging voters to see this election as an opportunity for meaningful change that would shape the nation’s future for generations.

He expressed confidence in the party’s chances of winning the upcoming election and urged supporters of the party to remain vigilant.
