Former President and 2024 flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly denied reports suggesting that he abruptly terminated his tour of the Northern Region to address political pressures in the Volta Region.

The NDC asserts that Mahama’s visit to the Volta Region was pre-planned and is part of a broader national campaign strategy.

In a statement released on Thursday, August 8, by the NDC’s Volta Regional Communications Office, the party condemned what it called “mischievous and misleading” reports by Accra-based Asaase Radio, a pro-NPP station.

The station had claimed that Mahama’s decision to head to the Volta Region was a hasty move to counter perceived gains made by NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia during his recent tour of the region.

The NDC clarified that Mahama had just concluded a successful four-day campaign tour of the Upper East Region, which ended on Tuesday, August 6th.

The subsequent visit to the Volta Region, the party explained, was always part of the NDC’s carefully laid out campaign itinerary and was not influenced by any external factors.

“We categorically reject the notion that John Mahama’s choice of the Volta Region as his next stop indicates any abandonment of the Northern Region to rescue any damage caused to the Volta Regional fortunes of the party,” the statement read.

The NDC emphasized that Mahama’s message continues to resonate with the people of the Northern Region and expressed unwavering confidence in the support of the Volta Region, which has historically been a stronghold for the party.

The statement also dismissed claims that the NPP, under Dr Bawumia’s leadership, poses a significant threat to the NDC’s dominance in the Volta Region. Describing Bawumia as the NPP’s “weakest flagbearer in recent history,” the NDC reiterated that the Volta Region remains the “world bank” of the party, with no threat to its loyalty.

Furthermore, the NDC criticized Asaase Radio for what it termed as “deliberate fabrication” and “blatant disregard for factual and responsible reporting.” The party called on the media outlet to retract its misleading report and issue an apology for attempting to misinform the public.

Despite the controversy, Mahama and the NDC reaffirmed their commitment to visiting every region in Ghana, engaging with citizens, and promoting their vision for the country’s future.

The party expressed confidence in the ability of Ghanaian voters to discern the truth and to reject any attempts at political misdirection.

“As we continue our journey to reset Ghana onto a trajectory of hope, development, stability, and prosperity, we will not be distracted by baseless speculations,” the NDC statement concluded.

The NDC’s Volta Regional Communications Officer, Sorkpa K. Agbleze, signed the statement, underscoring the party’s unified stance as it heads into the critical stages of the 2024 election campaign.
