Former President and NDC flagbearer John Mahama’s bold decision to choose a female running mate for the 2020 elections and again in 2024, is inspiring progressive change across Africa, according to Joyce Bawa Mogtari, Special Aide to Mr. Mahama.

She argued that the former president’s nomination of Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang “was widely respected and accepted.”

Ms. Mogtari wrote in a lengthy X post on Saturday, March 30, that Mahama “made an excellent choice for Ghana’s future” with his running mate selection.

She added that “his deep thinking and passion for progressive leadership and democracy have been recognised worldwide.”

The aide stated that while Mahama’s choice “was derided by some political opponents and even by some female leaders,” others have since realized its importance and is contemplating doing the same.

“They did their utmost to downplay the nomination and are now trying to replicate it,” she asserted.

However, Ms. Mogtari argued that Mahama has “yet to receive commendation” for taking the bold step of selecting a female running mate.

She said his decision serves as “the strongest indication that a female can become a Running Mate and Vice President.”

The former president’s move, according to his aide, shows he is “a shining example of outstanding leadership in the bold choices that he continues to make.”

She affirmed that “Mahama’s legacy will continue to inspire hope in Africa!”

John Mahama is considered one of the most influential politicians in Africa. He is known for his strategic and calm political style and is hailed as a progressive leader.
