The 98-year-old sub-chief of the Bole Traditional Area of Gonja, Gbenfuwura E.Y. Mahama, has rebutted claims made by Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye DC, the controversial New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman for the Bono Region.
Abronye DC alleged that former President John Mahama’s father, E.A. Mahama, was dismissed as Northern Regional Commissioner under Kwame Nkrumah’s administration for stealing a generator.
In response, Gbenfuwura E.Y. Mahama clarified that he personally installed a 60 kVA diesel generator in Bole during the 1960s.
This generator was intended for use by a group of Soviet geological teams residing in 12 bungalows in Bole, engaged in mineral prospecting.
He explained that the generator later provided electricity to several public facilities in Bole, including the District Commissioner’s Bungalow, the Health Centre, and a school, with street lights added later.
Addressing the allegations, Gbenfuwura E.Y. Mahama stated that contrary to claims by Abronye DC, the generator was not misappropriated for personal use but was legitimately used to provide essential services in Bole.
He recounted that initial misunderstandings arose when some mistakenly believed the generator was meant for Yendi, prompting an investigation by Kwame Nkrumah’s administration.
After verifying the generator’s usage in Bole, Nkrumah acknowledged the misunderstanding and reinstated E.A. Mahama to a ministerial position in Accra.
Gbenfuwura E.Y. Mahama, a former District Organiser during Nkrumah’s tenure, emphasized the historical context and invited verification of the facts, highlighting that part of the generator remains in Bole to this day.
He said part of the generator is still in Bole, adding, “I am 98 years old. I’m still alive… they can come and examine it.”
